Programme Overview
The Level 4 Diploma in Theology provides rigorous academic and vocational formation for those engaged in or preparing for Christian ministry. Eight units span the core disciplines of Christian theology — Scripture, the Gospels, church history, apologetics, doctrine, ethics, mission and leadership — and every unit includes a formally assessed vocational component in which students apply their learning in a real ministry setting. Academic depth and ministerial competence are developed together throughout the programme.
With 1,200 hours Total Qualification Time, the qualification reflects the workload of a full-time academic year consistent with UK Level 4 study expectations.
Programme Structure
Students complete eight mandatory units across two semesters. Semester 1 establishes the theological foundations — Scripture, Gospel studies, church history and apologetics. Semester 2 applies and integrates that foundation across doctrine, ethics, mission and leadership, culminating in a capstone unit requiring students to demonstrate integrated theological leadership in their own ministry context.
Scripture: Origins, Authority and Trust
The Gospels and the Life of Christ
Church History and the Development of Christian Thought
Apologetics and Engaging Contemporary Culture
Christian Doctrine
Ethics and the Christian Life
Mission: Theology and Practice
Integrative Theological Leadership
Learning Approach
Teaching combines lectures, seminars, theological discussion and guided vocational practice. Students engage with primary theological sources, academic scholarship and the breadth of Christian tradition, developing independent critical thinking alongside applied ministry skill.
At enrolment, students declare a Vocational Pathway — Youth and Children's Work, Worship and Music Ministry, Videography and Media Ministry, Preaching and Teaching, Church Planting and Mission, or Pastoral Care — which shapes how they meet the vocational requirement in each unit.
Learning is supported through our Moodle virtual learning environment, providing structured units, reading and video resources, theological study materials and assignment submission.
Assessment and Academic Standards
Assessment includes:
Written theological essays
Observed vocational ministry activities
Structured written reflective logs (800 words minimum)
Mentor observation reports
All assessments are aligned to defined learning outcomes designed to develop:
Theological knowledge and critical understanding
Analytical and evaluative engagement with sources and arguments
Applied ministry competence and vocational skill
Reflective practice and personal ministerial development
Students complete both an academic and a vocational assessment in every unit. Both must be achieved for the unit to be awarded.
